| 1964 Oldsmobile 442 History |
| Responding to the introduction of the Pontiac GTO, in 1964, Oldsmobile launched the 442 option package on the F-85 and Cutlass. The new "442" acronym was based on addition of a 4 barrel carburetor, 4 speed manual transmission and dual exhausts. The 442 package included heavy-duty shocks, springs, and a rear stabilizer bar. The 442 330 V8 motor was different from the Standard Cutlass V8, which included a dual-snorkel air cleaner, premium quality rod and main bearings, slightly hotter cam shaft profile, dual exhaust and all available police issued equipment. A 4 speed transmission was also included in the 442 package. Due to the late introduction in 1964, only 2,999 cars were produced with the 442 option. |
